Thank you for visiting

Welcome to the Ripley Parish Council web site. We hope that you will find it to be useful and informative.

The web site is intended as a service that will be able to grow and mature as it develops and we hope to be guided by you as to the content which should or should not be included. After all, Ripley Parish Council is here to provide a service which is needed by the community and not one which we think the community needs.

We hope to use this site to keep both the residential and business communities better informed of the services and the amenities supplied by the Parish Council and we look forward to receiving your views on the content of the site.

The village of Ripley is situated only one mile from the M25 motorway junction 10 and adjacent to the A3 London to Portsmouth road which was built to bypass the village. This has allowed Ripley to retain its rural atmosphere whilst providing excellent travel links to and from London and the South Coast.

Ripley is a friendly village with residents whose family ties stretch back to Victorian times and further, yet it welcomes new residents with an openness and friendliness which is not often found today.

With the excellent road links there is also a thriving business community ranging from small local shops through to light industry. The proximity of Ripley to the main urban areas of Guildford (6 miles) and Woking (5 miles) provide ample opportunity for shopping as well as rail links to all parts of the country and bus links to Heathrow and Gatwick airports, both of which lie approximately twenty miles from the village.

The village retains its strong sense of history and the Historical Society maintain a small museum in the village. The village was an important stopping point for naval officers en route from the Admiralty to the Royal Dockyard at Portsmouth and the Talbot Hotel, an old coaching inn, was frequented by Admiral Lord Nelson during his journeys to the coast.

Nearby, at Chatley Heath, you can still visit the semaphore tower, one of a chain stretching from London to Portsmouth to enable naval signals to be quickly transmitted between the Admiralty and its Captains aboard their ships during the days of sail.

Ripley holds one of the largest bonfire parades in Surrey, on the last Saturday of October each year, when residents and visitors alike celebrate Bonfire night with a torchlit procession, huge bonfire and a stunning firework display. A large funfair fills the wonderful village green which is the heart of the village. Here, cricket has been played longer than at any other ground in the world and, it is said, the middle stump was introduced at Ripley by a local bowler who became tired of seeing his cricket ball fly between the two upright stumps that were used at the time.

Another recent introduction is a monthly farmer’s market held, where else but on the village green, which has proven to be extremely popular. Over 50 individual stalls now set out their wares on the second Saturday of each month, selling
everything from food to flowers, meat to mead. It is now so popular that it attracts more and more stallholders and visitors each month and is probably the only farmer’s market in the county to be held in a rural setting, the remainder all being held in town centres. Ample free parking is provided and it is worth a visit to see the wide variety of locally produced goods that are available.

Only one mile away is the headquarters of the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley and these stunning gardens provide a beautiful day out for the gardener and non-gardener alike.

Several restaurants in the village and a surprisingly large number of pubs provide the means to entertain yourself for the evening and we look forward to welcoming you to our village.
