The Role of the Parish Council
The Parish Council is a statutory elected local authority which acts as a voice for the electorate in matters of local concern. The Parish Council also provides or maintains the following range of facilities.
PARISH CLERK - The Parish Council provides a part time parish clerk
who is responsible for the administration of the Parish Council. The current
Clerk, Alison Jones, works in the parish office which is situated at the rear of
the village hall. Office opening hours are as follows:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm. Please note: It is
prudent to phone the office prior to attending as the Clerk to the Council may
be out of the office on site visits or other duties.
VILLAGE GREEN - The Council takes responsibility for the upkeep of the village green and its environs. This involves grass cutting and woodland management and takes a considerable effort on the part of the Parish Council. Also included in the village green is the children's play area, cycle trail and goal posts. The Council has applied for planning permission to replace the goal posts with a ball court to allow basketball and football to be played. The play equipment is inspected regularly to ensure safety standards are maintained.
BURIAL GROUND - The Parish Council is responsible for the upkeep of part of the burial ground at the village church and a great deal of improvement has recently taken place. The right to a burial plot may be purchased from the Clerk at the Parish Council Office.
ALLOTMENTS - The village allotments, situated in Rose Lane, are managed by the Parish Council. They offer village residents the opportunity to grow their own vegetables and fruit and are always in demand. Please contact the Clerk if you wish to be added to the waiting list.
BUS SHELTERS - The Council is tasked with maintaining the bus shelters in the village and, should they be broken through accidental or deliberate damage, the cost of repairs must be met from council funds.
CAR PARK - The public car park by White Hart Court is leased by the Parish Council from Guildford Borough Council and the Parish Council is responsible for its maintenance.
PLANNING - The Parish Council has appointed representatives who have responsibility for the consideration of planning submissions within the parish. The full council considers all major developments.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS - The Parish Council is responsible for providing the festive lighting display of which the village is justly proud. The display is put in place and maintained for us by Guildford Borough Council. The Parish Council has started to replace the existing lights with more environmentally friendly LED lights over a three year period. A Christmas Fair and Switch on of the lights will take place on Saturday 3rd December to help raise funds for this project.
NOTICEBOARDS - The parish Council is responsible for the upkeep and renewal of noticeboards in the village located at the entrance to the Village Green, on the wooden bus shelter in the High Street and a partial responsibility for the notice board at St. Mary Magdalen Church.
